Post subject: Egyptian naval uniforms

Posted: Tue Oct 04, 2005 11:28 am

I have some questions regarding the ff:

1. What style are the white uniforms worn by Egyptian naval officers? Are they still the white tunics I once saw worn in a picture of Sadat's funeral, or are they in jacket-and-tie style, as in Germany?

2. Do ordinary sailors wear the common sailor's uniform (jumpers, yoke collars, brimless cap), at least for parade and service duties, or do they wear almost the same uniforms as their officers (as in India and South Africa)? If there are any pictures, they are welcome...

Anyway, Thanks in advance! :)

P.S: I posted the same question in the European section. I ask the administrators to please discard the said post.

Here you have a picture of a naval cadet in his parade uniform at his graduation day. If you remove the sash you will have the everyday uniform.

Well, I can't attach the file...

Please go to

http://www.presidency.gov.eg/html/President_Meetings_July2001.html

and scroll down to July 8 th. The picture shows ordinary sailors at their graduation day. The everyday uniform is just without the sash.

Please go to

http://www.mmc.gov.eg/

Click on branches, then choose navy forces, then choose biography of the vice admiral. There you will see a picture of Vice Admiral Tamer Abd El Aleem Mohamed Ismail. I've never, however, seen him in this black uniform in real life. He always wears the uniform on this picture, but in a white version... I hope this can answer the question... Sorry, I couldn't post the picture. Sorry...

To Brig. Gen. Adam Abdel Khalik:

Thanks for the links. The description of the officers' white uniform gives me enough idea about their appearances, I guess, so there's nothing to be sorry about.

And as for the ordinary sailors' uniforms, I think now I've seen everything. Shukran! :D Thanks for the links again!

Oh... knows a bit of Arabic too... [I] "Afwan"

Just found a picture of the Vice Admiral wearing his regular parade uniform:

http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2003/661/_eg1.htm

He doesn't wear any other uniform than this uniform.

At the left you have field marshal muhammed hussein al-tantawi, minister of war and military industry, commander in chief of the armed forces of Egypt - the only person in Egypt with the rank of field marshal (=mushir). Please note, that the minister of defence is also c-i-c, which i strongly oppose. You can see his picture on

http://www.defenselink.mil/photos/Sep2002/020917-D-2987S-004.jpg

In the middle you have president muhammed hosni mubarak, supreme commander of the armed forces (retired with the rank of lt. general, commander of the airforces, vice minister of war, chief air marshal). He was an excellent soldier, who holds a lot of unbroken promotional records in the military.

Just behind him is his aide-de-camp (major general). Don't know his name. Never heard him say anything. He's just always there right behind the president. He has a aiguillete on his right sholder, that isn't visible however.

To his right is the relevant person to this post, Vice Admiral Tamer Abd El Aleem Mohamed Ismail, vice admiral of the Egyptian Navy, commander of the Egyptian Naval Forces. Please notice, that no-one holds the rank of admiral (or colonel general of the airforce/cololnel general of the army), although theese ranks do exist. As I have told you, his uniform is white (even his shoes), and I've never seen him wear the black uniform that I mensioned... and the picture is actually taken on "navy day", so he is wearing his parade uniform and never wears anything else while on duty. Note the collar pathces and the rank of Lt. general. Also note, that he doesn't use the sleeve rank, although it exists on the black uniform. It would also look quite strange on the white uniform, and make his rank less comparable with the other branches (including the police). He should be wearing a tie (like the aide-de-camp), but it's quite hot, so he has chosen not to wear it, although it should be worn (like on http://www.defenselink.mil/photos/Sep2002/020917-D-2987S-004.jpg). On this picture you can se a rear admiral in the background, just zoom in.

The orange on the people on the ship is a life west - not a part of the uniform.

Thanks so much for the additional pictures-at least these clear up some of my confusion on the officers' white uniform-I see now the "formal" version of the white uniform uses a jacket-and-tie, only with black shoulderboards.

As for the Arabic, I know too little...
