Hi,i´m Cristiano , from Brazil.
In the British intelligence Book-Handbook of Turkish Army 1916(first edition ,1912) have other information different for your information.
About the officers is ok ,it´s same for me
http://img46.echo.cx/my.php?image=insignia19jn.jpg
Nco Rank Insignia
Sergeant Major- Bas Çavus- 3 stripes
Assistant Sergeant Major- Bas Çavus Mu'avini- 2 stripes
Sergeant- Çavus - 1 stripe
Corporal- On Bashi- no stripes [/highlight:868f8dabbc]
This is in the appendix and on page 135 it says-
"NCO's are distinguished from rank and file by having coloured shoulder
straps, of distinctive colour for the arm (of service) to which they
belong.
To distinguish the different grades of NCO broad traverse bands are
added
(gilt (gold) for combatants and silver for non-combatants). Sergeants
have
one band, assistant sergeant majors have two bands and sergeant majors
3
bands. Corporals have no bands. The shoulder straps are bordered with
red
edging. Sergeant Majors also add a red tassel to their side arms.
A further distinction of bands of distinctive colour above the cuffs is
now
being introduced: in this case a corporal will have one broad band, a
sergeant one broad and one narrow band, an assistant sergeant major two
broad and a sergeant major 3 broad bands [/highlight:868f8dabbc]
:?: :?: :?:
I am not saying that your information is wrong, but I am confused, Which would be the best source, more accurated, its your source of this English
source for these book. :?: :?: :?:
These Image was Taken for Handbook of Turkish Army,Battery Press.

Hi Cristiano...
Well my sources are some Greek editions based on the official archives of the Hellenic Army History Directorate of the Hellenic Army...
I'm pretty sure that the rank of Assistant Colour Sgt (Bas-Çavus Mu'avini) was introduced just before the WWI (in 1914). Almost every Balkan state changed the Army structure & the insignia in use, in 1914 or 1915 (Greece for instance changed the Army structure & introduced new ranks, under the advices of the French military mission to Greece, the Ottomans did the same with the Germans). These NCO & Officer ranks I've posted are strickly for the period of the 1st & 2nd Balkan Wars (1912-1913). Hope this helps
...greetings, valtrex

In fact Cristiano, I did made that mistake regarding the Army NCOs; I'm quoting from the book
Balkan Wars Insignia, Athens 1987
(please forgive any mistakes, I'm translating directly from Greek):
Ottoman Army introduced for the first time European style uniforms in 1828-29, influenced by the French. The Prussian (or German) influence appeared in 1890 & in 1909 the Ottomans adopted a new service dress (Model 1909 or M1909).
The NCO insignia was placed on the branch-colour shoulder strap. One crosscut band (1cm thick) of red[/highlight:2d12d04879] colour was used to distinguish the rank of Cpl (Onbasi), two 1cm-thick red bands for Sgt (Cavus), one gold[/highlight:2d12d04879] crosscut band (that's my mistake) for Colour Sgt (or as you have posted, Assistant Sgt.Maj.-Bascavus mu'azini) & two 1cm-thick gold crosscut bands for Sgt.Maj. (Bascavus)
So, I apologize to you & to our friends, you were obviously right. Thankfully, the Navy ranks are correct.
So, the correct NCO rank chart of the Ottoman Army in 1912, goes like this:
-one 1cm-thick red crosscut band on branch-colour shoulder strap-Onbasi
-two 1cm-thick red crosscut bands on branch-colour shoulder strap-Cavus
-one 1cm-thick gold crosscut band on branch-colour shoulder strap-Bascavus mu'azini
-two 1cm-thick gold crosscut bands on branch-colour shoulder strap-Bascavus
For Officers: Prussian
Feldachselstück
style shoulder boards.

Cristiano,
the first photo shows men-I'm sure of it-of the WWI era (they wear the
kabalak
field cap. In the pre-WWI years, Ottoman troops worn red fez & officers fez made of astrachan fur). It's definitely post Balkan wars photo. For the second photo ????
PS: Yes we have suffered alot & my family have paid a great deal too. We Greeks definitely won't forget what happened-history is history-but it's time to go on. We have to live in peace for the prosperity of our peoples. So, no harm made

Thank you very much for the pictures, Valtrex - they are great!!!
Unfortunately, Ottoman ones are mostly incorrect. Recently I was in the Istanbul and managed to visit their military museums.
So:
1. Both Zouaves Rgt were disbanded before 1912.
2. Even if there was "blue" uniform in some reserve units, it should have new insignia - not old Abdul-Hamidean shevrones.
3. After 1909 fez was abolished in the Army - only Kalpaks or Kabalaks were worn (fez still could be fount, but I doubt that it was worn with the new uniform).
4. Infantry 2nd Lt should have colored collar of his greatcoat.
5. Artillery Cpt and Ferik both wear German Iron Cross 2nd grade ribbons, which is impossible during Balkan Wars. Also uniform color is incorrect. Ferik also should have red collar and black kalpak (IIRC, only Ertogul regiment was allowed grey ones).
6. Stars on the shoulder straps are incorrect - see DDR generals stars.

Eugen thanx, welcome on board :)
Is it possible to post a simple chart of the Ottoman ranks of the period & a description of the insignia?

Eugen and Valtrex
I have these
rank chart
taken in Batery Press book-Handbook Turiksh Army.
http://img150.echo.cx/my.php?image=n1cos9yu.jpg
This is in the appendix and on page 135 it says-

NCO's are distinguished from rank and file by having coloured shoulder
straps, of distinctive colour for the arm (of service) to which they
belong.
To distinguish the different grades of NCO broad traverse bands are
added
(gilt (gold) for combatants and silver for non-combatants). Sergeants
have
one band, assistant sergeant majors have two bands and sergeant majors
3
bands. Corporals have no bands. The shoulder straps are bordered with
red edging. Sergeant Majors also add a red tassel to their side arms.
A further distinction of bands of distinctive colour above the cuffs is
now
being introduced: in this case a corporal will have one broad band, a
sergeant one broad and one narrow band, an assistant sergeant major two
broad and a sergeant major 3 broad bands
So, this is a british version of Turkish NCO Rank Insignia, a different for Valtrex Greek Book, because in british book the CORPORAL don´t have bands and the bands are in only two collors,
GOLD
and SILVER
In these british book it´s say that turkish NCO used rank insignia only in the Shoulder Straps or in the CUFFS.
Now, the real puzzle
http://www.uniformfotos.de/200.html
These photo is a german officer, but for me is NCO, because he is used bands and no used Prussian Feldachselstück style shoulder boards.
But in these photo in the shoulder strap have 04 BANDS, and in british book BANDS finish in 03 :!: :?: :!: :?:
look again.
http://img150.echo.cx/my.php?image=n1cos9yu.jpg
And in my Osprey book about Ottoman Army in 1914-1918 have a Stormtrooper Plate with a possible rank insignia in CHEVRON,these soldiers wearing german SteelHelmet, but i believe that chevrons are abolished in 1909 unifom.
Eugen , which is your opinion about Turkish NCO rank insignia, which is your version? Do you see something about this in your visit in Turkey?
I Have two letters received from ASKERI MÜZE, military museum, located in Istanbul, but all these letters are writing in Turkish language!!
In these forum have a turkish language translator?
Cheers for all

Hello all,
First of all, there is no NCO uniforms in Askeri Muze (at least for that period).
As for my information, the most correct is British handbook, save one thing - shoulder straps were made of uniform cloth, not of distinctive colour for the arm (look at your picture from Turkish official history - ritemost shoulder strap). Note, that during the war it seems that privates wore no shoulder straps at all.
Cuff insignia were introduced in 1916.
Valtrex, ASA I'll find some time, I'll do this chart.

To be honest, I am a bit confused about the crown shown at the bulgarians. It does not look much like the crown I found on the ranks insignia or the various bulgarian decorations. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks a lot

with colured shoulder strap.

Look these famous scene of film Lawrence Arabia-Lawrence prisoner of Turkish Bey, look the NCO extreme right, used shoulder strap without colour, so , i believe have two styles, with or without colour.

1st & 2nd BALKAN WARS, ORDER OF BATTLE
1st Balkan War
The Balkan League (Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria) won a series of comprehensive military victories over Ottoman forces.
September 25, 1912
: The Kingdom of Montenegro declares war on the Ottoman Empire.
October 4, 1912
: The Kingdom of Serbia & the Tsardom of Bulgaria declare war on the Ottoman Empire.
October 5, 1912
: The Kingdom of Greece declares war on the Ottoman Empire.
2nd Balkan War
The Second Balkan War began on
June 29, 1913
. On that date a Bulgarian general, acting without orders from his government, launched an attack on Serbian defensive positions. The Bulgarian government disavowed this attack, but on
July 8
, Serbia and Greece declared war. Within the next two weeks
Montenegro, Romania, and the Ottoman Empire
entered the war against Bulgaria. On
July 30
, Bulgaria, unable to withstand this coalition, asked for and received an armistice. By the ensuing peace agreement, signed at Bucharest, Romania, on
August 10
, Bulgaria lost considerable territory, including nearly
7,770 sq km (nearly 3,000 sq mi)
allotted to Romania. By later agreements Bulgaria also yielded a large territory to the Turks.
The Opposing Forces:

NOTE:
The country was divided into nine military districts, each of which housed a division; each division was comprised of
four infantry regiments in two brigades, two squadrons of cavalry, a regiment of field artillery, and an engineer battalion with telegraph, pontoon, railway, balloon and mining sections
. A peacetime infantry regiment had
two battalions-each made up of four rifle companies, a machine-gun company of two guns and a service company
. On mobilization, two extra divisions were formed-the
10th, with two brigades
, and the
11th with three
. With the addition of reservists, the 72 battalions of the peacetime establishment expanded to 288 battalions of 1,000 men each; the basic machine-gun detachment doubled in size, from two 8mm Maxims to four. A rifle company numbered 270 men, plus eight pioneers; a regiment consisted of 70 officers and 4,550 men, of whom 4,000 were riflemen. The service company strength was three officers and 200 men.
According to an Austrian military analyst, in 1909 the Bulgarian field army had a potential strength of 378,000 troops, and the militia 57,600. The backbone of the active army's field artillery was 81 batteries of Schneider-Canet 75mm quick-firing cannons, with a total of 324 guns. There were also 324 Krupp field guns in 54 six-gun batteries. The mountain artillery consisted of 54 Krupp guns in nine batteries; 36 Schneiders, also in nine batteries, and 54 older guns, possibly Russian or Turkish. There were nine batteries each of four quick-firing howitzers and five batteries each of six field howitzers, making a grand total of 858 guns in 176 batteries. In addition to the field artillery, the Bulgarians had three groups of fortress artillery; each group had two batteries and each battery four 155mm howitzers, with 12 munition wagons. Foreign observers at the annual maneuvers were always impressed by the skill of the mounted artillery drivers, who galloped into action at 15-yard intervals and turned the guns around before they were unlimbered.
The cavalry was comprised of
three Guard squadrons and 10 line regiments
, of which the first four regiments had
four squadrons each and formed a division
. Regiments
5 through 10 had three squadrons each
, and those 18 squadrons were attached in pairs to the nine divisional districts
