Great work, Mark!
Just one point: how d'you think the Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, etc would react to wearing a cross?
Or the Christians to wearing an inverted cross?
The four and five-dots ranks perhaps would do better with a circular or diamond-shaped arrangement... wouldn't you say?

On the other hand, if the Roman Empire didn't cease existing, today most (if not all) of Europe would be guarded by the legions, after they fought and won myriad battles against pretty much everybody, Vikings included. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if a reverse "Red Sea rig" would app...

The Roman Empire (and European society) changed because of the migrant peoples. So, let's assume they were defeated and assimilated, or they didn't migrate, at all. In this case, I would assume a Roman Empire changed by the times (invention of the steam engine - Heron of Alexandria did it -, gunpowd...

There are some indications in the books, but nothing detailed. In the USE Navy, the first CNO (Admiral Simpson) made his own rank insignia (stars) and handed out bars to LT Canttrell. The first head of the USE Air Force (Col. Woods) wore eagles and his officers/NCS's wore US insigni (or so is hinted...

What you need to do is think out of the box. In other words, don't factor in the existing systems, but rather come up with an entirely new one. Out of top of my head: different cathegories with different numbers of point, like: junior NCO's 3-pointed stars, senior NCO's 4-pointed stars, WO's 5-point...

I'm really sorry to squash your ideas, but it won't work.
